National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials carried out searches at nine locations across Tamil Nadu on Tuesday (August 12), including in Chennai and Madurai.

The action is linked to a drug smuggling case in the Andaman region. In 2024, authorities seized 5,500 kg of methamphetamine about 150 km from Vijayapuram and arrested seven Myanmar nationals who were on a boat.

Officials said the searches in Tamil Nadu were conducted at the residences of people believed to have been in contact with the arrested suspects.

Investigators are examining whether the network has links to a Myanmar-based drug smuggling gang. The agency said the raids were conducted based on cases related to terror links or other unlawful activities.
