Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay will move a special resolution in the Assembly on August 12 opposing the proposed delimitation of constituencies.
According to the report, a delimitation bill was introduced in Parliament during the extended Budget Session in April, but it was defeated. With the Monsoon Session now underway, the Union government is said to be planning to reintroduce a revised version of the bill.
To discuss the possible impact on Tamil Nadu, a meeting of the state’s MPs was recently convened. Of the total 57 MPs from both Houses, only 19 attended, while major parties including the DMK and AIADMK stayed away.
The meeting unanimously called for the Tamil Nadu Assembly to pass a government resolution to permanently safeguard the rights of Tamil Nadu and other southern states. The resolution to be moved on August 12 is intended to stress that the current Lok Sabha strength of 543 MPs should be retained permanently.
