Tambaram City Police have sent back 160 Bangladeshi nationals who were found to be staying in India illegally, following a complaint and intelligence inputs about unauthorised migration.
The action focused on Chennai’s suburban belt in Chengalpattu district—areas such as Thaiyur, Kelambakkam, Navalur, Thazhambur, Padur, Pudupakkam, Kanathur and Muttukadu—where large numbers of migrant workers are employed in construction and other jobs.
Police said some Bangladeshi nationals were allegedly living and working by posing as residents of West Bengal and using forged Aadhaar cards. Based on the information, teams led by Kelambakkam Assistant Commissioner John Victor and Inspector Thamizhannban conducted a surprise inspection on August 2 in the Kelambakkam, Thazhambur and Kanathur police station limits.
During the verification, 250 people identified as West Bengal residents were accommodated at a private marriage hall in Kazhipattur and their identity documents were checked. Officials said 128 among them were found to be Bangladeshi nationals and were later housed at a private marriage hall in Anakaputhur, Chennai.
In a related operation, 32 more people were detained from the Attur area in Salem district. With arrangements made through the Bangladesh High Commission, all 160 were sent to Bangladesh on a special flight, police said.
