The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Chennai has issued a rain alert for parts of Tamil Nadu, warning of heavy rainfall in the Nilgiris and Theni districts.
In its bulletin, the weather office said a weak trough in the lower atmosphere is prevailing over coastal Tamil Nadu. It also noted that rain occurred at a few places in Tamil Nadu, with light rain recorded in Puducherry, while Karaikal remained dry. The highest rainfall reported was 7.1 cm at Dharmapuri BDO.
Forecast for Aug 13: Heavy rain with thunder and gusty winds is likely at isolated places in Nilgiris and Theni. Moderate rain may occur in Madurai, Dindigul, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram and Pudukkottai. Light rain with thunder is possible at a few places in other districts and in the Karaikal region.
Forecast for Aug 14: Similar heavy rain with thunder and gusty winds may continue at isolated places in Nilgiris and Theni. Light rain is likely in several districts including Madurai, Dindigul, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchirappalli, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Karur, Namakkal, Salem, Erode, Coimbatore, Tiruvannamalai, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi and Villupuram.
