Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Assembly witnessed sharp differences on a government resolution opposing a possible Lok Sabha constituency delimitation move, with several parties questioning the need for such a step at this stage.
The state government brought the resolution amid reports that the Union government may reintroduce a constitutional amendment bill linked to delimitation. A similar bill, aimed at increasing Lok Sabha seats and enabling 33% reservation for women, had been introduced in Parliament in April but did not pass.
Chief Minister Vijay moved the resolution and read it out in the House. The resolution received support from the DMK, the Left parties, MMK, MJK, VCK, and the Congress, whose members spoke in favour of the government’s stand.
However, the AIADMK, PMK, DMDK and BJP opposed the move, arguing that the Union government has not officially tabled any fresh bill and that the resolution was based on unconfirmed reports. AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami said the party would back women’s 33% reservation, but questioned the timing and intent of the resolution on delimitation.
