A 51-year-old candidate from Nagapattinam has secured an MBBS seat in Tamil Nadu’s 2026–27 medical admissions counselling, saying the NEET entrance exam made his long-held ambition possible.
The state has 7,157 MBBS seats and 1,383 BDS seats across government and self-financing medical colleges. For this academic year, 72,627 applicants registered, and counselling began after the release of the rank list.
Special category and the 7.5% reservation for government school students were held at the Omandurar Government Multi Super Specialty Hospital campus in Chennai. Under the sports quota, 280 applied and 13 MBBS and two BDS seats were filled. In the differently-abled category, 108 applied against 224 available seats, and all applicants were allotted seats.
Sureshkumar received his MBBS allotment order under the differently-abled category. He said he studied in Tamil medium and had been working in a private company, and scored 192 marks in NEET to secure the seat.
He added that his wife has assured support by managing the family, and that he took the decision after planning for his children’s education needs. Since he will be studying medicine in his home district, he said he is confident of becoming a doctor.
