Chennai Corporation has decided to immediately suspend the ongoing property tax revision, Commissioner Sameeran said in a statement on Wednesday.

The move comes amid controversy after property owners reported receiving revised tax orders indicating increases of more than double for around 30,000 properties. The civic body had earlier maintained that there was no tax hike, and that only a reassessment exercise was carried out.

In his statement, the Commissioner said the Corporation will examine public representations related to the revised assessments and take appropriate action. He noted that revisions were initiated for certain properties found to have been under-assessed.

The Corporation will restore the tax amount to the earlier level, he said. For those who have already paid the revised amount, the payment will be adjusted as advance for subsequent periods.
