Tamil Nadu BJP has challenged state minister Aadav Arjuna over his remarks on the proposed constituency delimitation exercise, saying he is spreading misinformation and indulging in “unhealthy politics”.
In a statement, the party said Union Home Minister Amit Shah has maintained that the number of existing Lok Sabha constituencies in all states would be increased by 50%. Based on that claim, it argued that Tamil Nadu’s seats would rise from 39 to 59.
The BJP further said this would marginally improve Tamil Nadu’s share of representation from 7.18% to 7.23%. It rejected the minister’s allegation that delimitation would benefit only northern states, adding that if that were the intent, the Centre could have implemented delimitation directly using the 2011 Census, which it said could have given Uttar Pradesh 140 seats.
According to the statement, the minister’s claims would be “torn apart” the moment the bill is introduced in the Lok Sabha. The party asked whether Aadav Arjuna would accept defeat and quit politics if the BJP and Amit Shah’s position is proven correct when the bill is passed.
