Dehradun: A tunnel in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district was hit by a sudden surge of water, followed by mud, leaving workers trapped inside. Officials said seven workers have been recovered dead so far.

The incident occurred at Pipalkoti, where 18 workers were on duty inside a tunnel being developed under the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation. As water gushed in, the force of the flow swept the workers towards the tunnel entrance.

After receiving information, teams from the State Disaster Response Force and the National Disaster Response Force rushed to the spot. Rescue personnel carried out operations for several hours amid difficult conditions.

Authorities said the recovery effort is continuing, and the death toll stands at seven based on bodies retrieved till now.
