Bengaluru’s civic administration has proposed charging residents an annual fee to park cars on public roads outside their homes, citing traffic congestion caused by roadside parking. The proposal is part of a draft plan released by the Greater Bengaluru Authority.
Under the draft, roadside parking would no longer be free for most vehicles, with exemptions mentioned for two-wheelers and autorickshaws in designated contexts. City roads would be classified into three categories—A, B and C—with hourly parking fees set at Rs 80, Rs 60 and Rs 40 respectively.
The draft notes that charges may rise for parking beyond two hours, with the increase potentially going up to 1.5 times the base rate. For parking in designated parking facilities instead of on public roads, monthly fees are proposed at Rs 1,000–2,000 for two-wheelers and Rs 2,000–4,000 for cars.
A 50% monthly discount is proposed for vehicles parked overnight between 8 pm and 8 am. The plan also offers incentives for converting vacant plots into public parking areas, including property tax exemption for up to 35 years.
For residents parking cars outside their own homes, the draft proposes annual charges of Rs 15,000 for small cars, Rs 20,000 for sedans and Rs 25,000 for SUVs. Permission would be granted only after GBA marshals verify that sufficient space remains for other vehicles to pass. The public has 30 days to submit feedback before a final decision is taken.
