The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has assured that Tamil Thai Vazhthu will be part of the Independence Day celebrations held on the court premises.
The assurance came after the Madurai Bench Bar Association (MMBA) raised concerns over a circular that outlined the programme as Vande Mataram, followed by the flag hoisting, and then the National Anthem—without mentioning Tamil Thai Vazhthu.
In a letter to the Registrar General, MMBA general secretary Jesi Jeevapriya said the High Court has long followed the tradition of beginning official functions with Tamil Thai Vazhthu, describing it as a symbol of Tamil language and cultural pride, and sought its inclusion in the August 15 event.
MMBA president Arulvadivel (a) Sekar said office-bearers of various bar associations met Administrative Judge C.V. Karthikeyan and reiterated the request. He said the judge assured them that Tamil Thai Vazhthu would be sung on the stage during the celebrations.
He also noted that the Chief Justice had earlier instructed the Advocate General to ensure that the State government’s established protocol during the Chief Minister’s flag-hoisting is followed, and the same practice would be adopted for the High Court event as well.
