A Class 12 student of a government higher secondary school in Tiruvottiyur, Chennai, was allegedly beaten to death by a group of students following a dispute linked to a “who is senior” argument, police said.
According to the police, the student had stepped out after school and was speaking with friends near a bus stop when a 20-member gang allegedly assaulted him and dragged him to a vacant ground behind the bus stand. The group reportedly attacked him repeatedly and fled.
Tiruvottiyur police reached the spot after receiving information and took the student to Stanley Government Hospital. Doctors declared him brought dead.
Police officials, led by Vannarapettai Deputy Commissioner Bhaskaran, visited the scene and began an inquiry. Investigators said a quarrel had earlier broken out between a Class 11 student and a friend of the deceased, after which teachers had reprimanded them.
Police said the Class 11 student allegedly waited outside the school with around 20 former students who had failed and were no longer studying there, intending to attack the person involved in the dispute. When that student did not come to school, the gang allegedly targeted his close friend instead. Police are searching for the absconding Class 11 student and others involved in the attack.
