Kolkata: Former West Bengal Deputy Speaker Ashis Banerjee was found dead under mysterious circumstances at a Trinamool Congress (TMC) office in Birbhum district on Saturday (August 16). Police said an investigation is under way.
Banerjee had served as Deputy Speaker during the tenure of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and was elected as an MLA five times. He had contested the last Assembly election but lost.
After receiving information, police rushed to the party office, recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination.
Investigators said they are examining multiple angles to determine whether it was a case of suicide or murder. Police also recovered a one-page note attributed to Banerjee.
In the note, he reportedly stated that he had never taken money for any work, and that he could not accept the wrongdoings within the party and was unable to fight against them.
