The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has issued a heavy rainfall warning for parts of Tamil Nadu, citing a weak trough in the lower atmosphere over coastal areas.
For August 18, heavy rain accompanied by thunder and gusty winds is likely at isolated places in Chengalpattu and Villupuram districts. Moderate rain with thunder and strong winds may occur at a few places over the Western Ghats districts, parts of north coastal Tamil Nadu, and in Puducherry and Karaikal.
For August 19, the Met office said isolated heavy rain with thunder and gusty winds is possible in Nilgiris, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur and Villupuram. Similar moderate rain conditions may continue over the Western Ghats districts, parts of north coastal Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry and Karaikal.
The bulletin also carried a warning for fishermen. Squally winds of 45–55 kmph are expected over the Tamil Nadu coastal areas, south Tamil Nadu coastal belt and parts of the Kumari Sea from today until August 20, and fishermen have been advised not to go to sea.
Earlier, the forecast for August 17 indicated moderate rain with thunder and gusty winds at a few places over the Western Ghats districts, and in Madurai, Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga, with light rain possible in other parts of Tamil Nadu as well as Puducherry and Karaikal.
