Iran has issued a sharp response to the United States over the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime route used for international fuel shipments.
The statement comes amid heightened tensions between the US and Iran, with reports that Washington is seeking to take control of the strait. Former US President Donald Trump has been quoted as saying the area would be seized soon and declared part of the United States.
Reacting to those remarks, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the Strait of Hormuz belongs to Iran and will remain with Iran.
He added that the strait would be opened or closed only on Iran’s orders, and warned that the “shutdown” would continue until Trump accepts defeat.
