Senior officials of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders have met Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, fuelling reports that the company’s proposed shipbuilding investment may shift away from Tamil Nadu.
The Central government-owned firm had signed a memorandum of understanding in September 2025 in Gujarat with Tamil Nadu’s guidance agency to set up a shipbuilding yard in Thoothukudi district, with an investment of ₹15,000 crore.
However, the project reportedly faced hurdles in Tamil Nadu, including delays in land allocation in Thoothukudi. Amid these issues, there had been speculation that the company was considering Andhra Pradesh instead.
According to company officials, the meeting with Naidu on August 11 focused on opportunities where Andhra Pradesh could contribute to the growth of India’s shipbuilding yards and the maritime industry.
Following the discussions, information has emerged suggesting that the investment initially tied to the Thoothukudi shipyard plan could now be directed to Andhra Pradesh.
