A controversy has erupted after a video surfaced from the Independence Day programme at the Congress headquarters in Delhi, where “Vande Mataram” was played after the national flag was hoisted.
According to the claim, the song was stopped midway after Sonia Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge allegedly signalled with their hands to halt the music. Rahul Gandhi is also seen making a similar gesture in the clip, triggering criticism from political opponents.
BJP leaders condemned the incident, with Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav demanding an apology from Sonia Gandhi and Kharge. BJP leader Amit Malviya also criticised the alleged act.
Addressing a public meeting in Chhattisgarh’s Sitapur, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the clip was watched by people across the country and alleged that the Congress had disrespected “Vande Mataram” on Independence Day. He urged the party to seek forgiveness from the public.
Meanwhile, BJP workers have filed a complaint against Sonia Gandhi at the Urwa police station in Karnataka, citing alleged disrespect to the patriotic song.
