Industries and households in several districts of Tamil Nadu are facing disruption due to erratic power supply and persistent low-voltage issues, according to industry representatives and residents. They have urged the government to take immediate steps to ensure stable electricity distribution.
Power connections are provided under low-tension and high-tension categories, with homes, shops and micro, small and medium units up to 150 kW falling under the low-tension segment. While the state’s average daily demand is around 16,000 MW, it typically crosses 20,000 MW during April and May.
This year, however, the heat has continued beyond the usual summer period, keeping demand elevated. The peak demand touched 21,724 MW on July 14 and remains around 20,000 MW, leading to low-voltage complaints in Chennai and other districts.
Residents say the fluctuating supply affects the operation of fans, motor pumps and air-conditioners, and has damaged appliances such as televisions, refrigerators and mixers. Industrial bodies report production interruptions and equipment damage when machines stop abruptly during short outages lasting five to ten minutes.
Representatives from small and micro industry associations in areas including Tiruvallur, Villupuram and Coimbatore said low voltage and unannounced power cuts are impacting operations and causing losses. They called for uninterrupted and steady power supply to prevent further damage to machinery and household equipment.
