New Delhi: In a first-of-its-kind move, the Union government has set production targets for public and private oil companies to quickly raise domestic LPG output whenever distribution is affected.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said daily maximum production levels have been assigned to a total of 21 refineries and oil and gas producing units. Together, they have been tasked to produce 63,810 tonnes of LPG per day.
The ministry noted that import flows were impacted amid tensions linked to the West Asia conflict, increasing India’s dependence on overseas supplies to meet LPG demand. The new targets are intended to ensure household LPG availability even if future supply disruptions occur.
Reliance’s Jamnagar refinery has been given a daily target of 18,000 tonnes. Public sector oil companies’ 18 refineries have been assigned a combined daily target of 31,470 tonnes.
The ministry added that the production schedule will be reviewed once every six months. Current domestic LPG production is about 13.1 million tonnes a year, or roughly 35,900 tonnes per day.
