Coimbatore railway station has reported a rise in footfall, with daily passenger numbers reaching about 65,000 and average daily earnings touching around Rs 1.8 crore, according to information from the Salem Railway Division.

The Salem division under Southern Railway has 94 stations, including Coimbatore, Mettupalayam, Tiruppur, Erode and Salem. To improve passenger facilities and manage crowding, Podanur and North Coimbatore stations are being upgraded under the Amrit Bharat scheme.

Railway officials said the response from passengers has also led to an increase in special train operations via Podanur. Coimbatore continues to be the highest revenue-earning station in the Salem division.

In the 2025–26 financial year, Coimbatore station earned Rs 368.08 crore and secured the fourth position in the Southern Railway list. The station recorded 2.39 crore passenger entries and exits, with about 140 trains passing through daily.

Officials added that Salem division earned Rs 509.25 crore from passenger traffic and Rs 209.19 crore from freight between January and July this year. They attributed the rise in rail travel to factors such as fuel prices and advisories encouraging the use of public transport, while noting that works worth Rs 150 crore are under way at Podanur to develop it as a second terminal for Coimbatore.
