Large quantities of dead fish were found floating in the Kosasthalai river near Ennore on Sunday, triggering shock and anger among local fishing communities. Fishers said their livelihoods have been hit and staged a road blockade at the Ennore–Thazhanguppam junction, disrupting traffic.
According to residents, the incident was seen in the estuary stretch between the Kosasthalai river and the Ennore mouth, where fish varieties including maduvai and karappodi were found dead in large numbers. Dead fish were also reported along connected waterways such as the Kosasthalai river, the surplus canal from Pulhal lake and other channels, with a strong stench and sanitation concerns in the area.
Fishers alleged that chemical waste released from nearby industries into the Buckingham Canal has become a recurring problem, leading to discoloured water and fish deaths. They also claimed that hot water discharge from the Vallur thermal power station affects aquatic life, and alleged that an overnight discharge led to the latest mass death.
After information reached authorities, Tiruvottiyur MLA Senthilkumar, fisheries department officials and police held talks with the protesters. The blockade was withdrawn after several hours of discussions.
Meanwhile, an inspection team led by Xavier, Chief Engineer of the North Chennai thermal power station, collected water samples and conducted tests including pH and toxicity checks. Officials said the tests did not indicate any issue in the water, but did not specify the cause of the fish deaths.
PMK president Anbumani called for a probe into the recurring incidents, removal of the dead fish to prevent disease spread, and action against responsible firms. He also sought compensation and support for fishers, noting that fishing may not be possible in the affected stretch for the next few weeks.
