Sri Lankan Tamil refugees living in a rehabilitation camp at Gummidipoondi in Tiruvallur district have raised allegations against Q Branch intelligence personnel stationed there for monitoring duties.
According to the claims, the camp houses about 970 families, totalling around 2,700 people. Two Q Branch personnel are said to be assigned to keep watch on activities inside the camp and the movement of outsiders.
Refugees allege that an office meant for a Revenue Inspector (RI) near the camp remained vacant for around five years, during which time the Q Branch personnel allegedly occupied the space and began using it as their own office.
They further claim that the government provides monthly assistance to refugees, including to some who are registered at the camp but live outside. The refugees allege that the Q Branch personnel diverted the assistance meant for such beneficiaries.
The refugees have urged higher authorities to look into the allegations and take appropriate action.
