Movement of outsiders has reportedly increased in panchayat, town panchayat and suburban areas of the district, with locals noting a rise in people coming in and out of villages. In this backdrop, residents say there are limited mechanisms to track visitors.

Over the past few days, theft incidents and attempted thefts have been reported more frequently in suburban pockets. With CCTV coverage still limited in many places, police are said to be facing difficulties in identifying suspects and collecting evidence.

Various organisations, volunteers and members of the public have urged local bodies and large institutions to jointly install surveillance cameras on key roads and at places where people gather. They also stressed the need to create proper funding sources for the initiative.

As a suggestion, they said new commercial establishments and house builders could earmark a small portion of construction costs for installing cameras, which would protect individual properties while improving area-wide safety.

They have called on District SP Jayakumar to consult the district administration and take steps to implement expanded CCTV coverage in rural and suburban areas.
