Tamil Nadu government departments are said to have more than three lakh vacancies, even as the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) has issued a notification to recruit only 821 candidates through the Combined Group 2 and Group 2A examinations.

According to the notification, the Group 2 exam covers 41 posts, while Group 2A covers 780 posts. The announcement has drawn attention because the overall number of vacancies notified is small compared to the vacancies reportedly existing across departments.

In Group 2, vacancies for several roles have been listed in single digits. The posts mentioned include Labour Assistant Inspector, Sub-Registrar, Assistant Commercial Tax Officer and Secretariat Assistant Section Officer, among others.

TNPSC aspirants said the large number of unfilled posts has increased workload for existing staff. They also said they had expected more vacancies—especially in high-participation exams like Group 4 and Group 2—adding that Group 2 typically attracts around eight lakh applicants, making the limited intake discouraging.
