New Delhi: India’s wholesale price inflation (WPI) eased to 9.78% in July, down from 9.87% in June, according to data released by the Union Commerce Ministry.

The moderation was led by a sharp cooling in the fuel and power segment. Inflation in this category fell to 20.05% in July from 27.41% a month earlier.

Food inflation also edged lower, easing to 5.44% from 5.49% in June, indicating a marginal softening in prices.

In contrast, inflation in manufactured products rose to 8.29% in July from 7.48% in June, suggesting higher price pressures in the factory-made goods segment.

The government has indicated that the WPI framework will be phased out gradually over the next five years and replaced fully by the Producer Price Index (PPI). Even so, the producer price index for July was unchanged at 9.6%.
