Dubai and other parts of the United Arab Emirates were placed on alert after the country’s air defence systems detected a missile attack threat, according to local reports.

The warning comes amid heightened regional tensions linked to the conflict involving the US and Israel against Iran, which began in late February over allegations related to nuclear weapons. In response, Iran had blocked cargo movement, including crude oil shipments, through the Strait of Hormuz.

The disruption led to a global crude shortage and pushed up petrol and diesel prices. A temporary peace agreement between Iran and the US was reached in June, but it reportedly expired recently.

Following the detection of the threat, the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority advised residents in Dubai and other emirates to remain in safe locations. Minutes after the alert, sirens and loud blasts were reported in Dubai.

The UAE military confirmed that Iran carried out a missile attack and said two missiles were shot down over the sea.
