India’s women’s hockey team registered a commanding 6-1 win over South Africa in a Hockey World Cup league match at Amstelveen in the Netherlands.

The 16th Hockey World Cup is being held across Wavre in Belgium and Amstelveen in the Netherlands, featuring both men’s and women’s competitions. India, ranked ninth in the world, are placed in Pool D alongside England, China and South Africa.

After drawing their opening match against China, India dominated from the start against the 18th-ranked South Africans. Sunelita opened the scoring in the 11th minute, before Navneet Kaur (17th) and Sushila Chanu (25th) extended the lead to make it 3-0 at half-time.

India continued the pressure after the break with goals from Deepika (38th) and Lalremsiami (44th). Sunelita added her second in the 45th minute, while South Africa’s De Waal Kayla pulled one back in the 55th. India closed out the match 6-1.

In other matches, China beat England 4-2 in Pool D, while Ireland edged New Zealand 3-2 in Pool C.
