The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Union government, all state and Union Territory administrations, and social media platforms Meta and X on a public interest petition seeking restrictions on police posts about accused persons on social media.

The petition, filed through advocate Srutanjay Bharadwaj, urges authorities to frame appropriate guidelines to regulate how police use social media. It specifically seeks a bar on uploading content that reveals an accused person’s face or identity, or portrays them in a humiliating manner.

It also calls for a prohibition on disclosing the identity of accused persons on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and X, and seeks directions for social media companies to develop guidelines in this regard.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Jaymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana directed that notices be issued, seeking responses from the Centre, the states and UTs, and the concerned platforms.
