Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Chennai late on Wednesday night to attend a conference of southern states’ chief ministers scheduled for Thursday. The meeting is being held at a private star hotel on East Coast Road in Kovalam, near Chennai, where Shah is set to chair the proceedings.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay met Amit Shah and held discussions at the Kovalam venue, according to official sources. BJP leaders from Tamil Nadu received Shah at the airport before he proceeded to the hotel.
The conference is expected to take up inter-state river water disputes, river-linking proposals, and coordination on inter-state highway projects. Railway-related projects are also likely to be discussed, government sources said.
Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Congress, led by state president Manickam Tagore, held a protest at Chennai Egmore opposing Shah’s visit. Senior leaders including Thirunavukkarasu and Azhagiri participated, raising slogans over constituency delimitation and an alleged attack on students in Delhi; police detained 300 protesters.
