Chennai: Water Resources Minister Anand on Tuesday said the government would take steps to open the Mettur dam soon, as water continues to flow into the reservoir.

Speaking during a debate in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, AIADMK MLA Sekar said farmers were affected due to the lack of water in the Rajavaikkal canal, forcing some to resort to hunger protests. He also claimed that groundwater in several places was turning saline and urged the government to release water at least on a 15-day basis.

Responding, the minister said the Mettur dam currently holds water up to 82.7 feet and inflow is continuing. He added that the government expects about 9 TMC of water to be received by August 26.

The minister said he would discuss the matter with the Chief Minister and department officials to expedite the decision on releasing water. He also noted that desilting works for waterbodies in Chennai are underway ahead of the northeast monsoon at a cost of Rs 42 crore, while Rs 500 crore has been earmarked for restoring waterbodies across the state, which is expected to generate employment for about six lakh people. Additionally, 700 lakes and ponds are being desilted through Rotary clubs.
