A POCSO special court in Tirunelveli has sentenced Christian pastor Abraham (47) to death for sexually abusing four minor girls in Melailanthakulam area of the district.

According to the prosecution, Abraham, a preacher from the Gangaikondan area, used to take women and children to various districts as part of his religious work. In 2022, he allegedly sexually assaulted four girls, including three sisters aged 12, 13 and 8.

Based on information shared by the children, their parents filed a complaint. The Tirunelveli rural All Women Police registered a case under the POCSO Act and arrested Abraham. Following the district SP’s directions, a detailed investigation was carried out under the supervision of Additional SP Shanmugam.

During the trial before the Tirunelveli POCSO special court, witnesses were examined and evidence was presented. In the final hearing held on Wednesday, Judge Sureshkumar held that the charges were proved and awarded the death penalty.

The court also directed the Tamil Nadu government to provide compensation of ₹10 lakh each to the four victims. Officials noted that this is the fourth instance in which the Tirunelveli POCSO special court has awarded the death sentence after conviction in POCSO cases.
