Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Wednesday announced a package of facilities for all-party MLAs, including government-provided vehicles and monthly financial support for travel and office work. The announcements were made in the Assembly under Rule 110.

The move follows a request raised on August 12 by Kattumannarkoil MLA Jothimani, who said several MLAs do not own vehicles, making it difficult to inspect constituency work and conduct field visits. The Chief Minister said the number of first-time MLAs from modest backgrounds has increased, and that regular travel across constituencies is essential to hear grievances and monitor delivery of government schemes.

As part of the plan, the government will provide a vehicle to every MLA to help them travel independently across their constituencies. The Chief Minister said this would reduce dependence on others for travel needs and support transparent, honest administration by easing financial pressure on legislators.

The government will also provide ₹75,000 per month towards driver salary, fuel and vehicle maintenance, and ₹25,000 per month to appoint an assistant for office-related work. Necessary legal amendments and government orders will be issued, he said.

Officials noted that, excluding the Chief Minister, ministers and the Speaker—who already have government-provided Innova cars—there are 199 MLAs who would be covered for vehicle purchase support of up to ₹15 lakh each. They added that the Finance Department will decide whether the existing ₹25,000 vehicle allowance in the current pay structure will continue alongside the new provisions.
