Veteran actress Saugor Janaki (94) died in Chennai on Thursday following age-related health complications. She had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city for the past few days.

According to reports, she was in the intensive care unit and passed away around 2 pm on August 21.

Janaki entered Tamil cinema in 1952 with Valayapathi and went on to act in several notable films including Panam Paduthum Paadu, Pudhiya Paravai, Neerkumizhi, Mahakavi Kalidas, Ethir Neechal, Iru Kodugal, Uyarndha Manithan, Kaaviya Thalaivi, Ranga Rattinam, Thillu Mullu, Vetri Vizha and Hey Ram.

She acted in more than 400 films across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. The Tamil film Biskoth, featuring Santhanam, was her last release in the language.

Her death has sparked widespread grief among members of the film fraternity and fans. Chief Minister Vijay, in a condolence statement, said her decades-long journey and distinctive performances that touched multiple generations would remain celebrated, calling her passing a major loss to the film industry.
