Washington: The United States’ national public debt has climbed past Rs 3,840 lakh crore, reaching a fresh record, according to the latest daily financial report issued by the US Treasury.
The Treasury routinely publishes end-of-day updates on government finances. In the report released on August 18, the debt level was shown to have surged to an unprecedented high.
Earlier, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) had projected that US debt would rise to Rs 3,773 lakh crore by the end of the 2026 fiscal year. However, the country has crossed that estimate within eight months, with the total now exceeding Rs 3,840 lakh crore.
Economists cited multiple factors behind the rise, including the West Asia war situation, higher military spending, increased funding for social security, and a sharp jump in interest costs after rate hikes aimed at controlling inflation.
The development has also triggered criticism of President Donald Trump, who had pledged during the election period to reduce public expenditure, with opponents alleging that the country has been pushed deeper into debt.
