Chennai will receive a Rs 2,185 crore loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to strengthen the city’s drinking water and sewerage infrastructure. The loan agreement has been signed between the Union government and ADB.

The project aims to improve access to safe drinking water and sanitation in the city, while also enhancing resilience to climate change. Officials said the initiative is expected to support better public health and overall quality of life.

As part of the works, more than 170 km of water supply and sewer pipelines will be laid. In addition, seven water pumping stations and 38 sewer pumping stations will be upgraded.

A key feature is the introduction of a “ring main” closed pipeline system in Chennai for the first time. Water and sewer services will also be strengthened through digital upgrades.

The project will be implemented in coordination with the Centre’s AMRUT 2.0 (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) and the Urban Challenge Fund programmes.
