Tamil Nadu Congress chief Manickam Tagore has urged the state government to extend car facilities to panchayat presidents, on the lines of what is provided to MLAs.

Speaking to reporters, Tagore said the move would support local body leaders and reiterated that southern states should come together to safeguard Tamil Nadu’s rights and students’ future.

He also responded to remarks that the Congress-led INDIA alliance would be weak without the DMK. Tagore said the alliance has 23 parties and only three have exited, calling it “amusing” to portray the bloc as powerless in the absence of one party.

Referring to the Centre’s proposed constituency delimitation, Tagore warned that anyone backing it out of fear of the CBI would be acting as “traitors,” according to his statement.

The comments came after a Congress general council meeting in Chennai, where youth under 35 attended as special invitees. Reports said some participants left the hall after AICC general secretary K.C. Venugopal’s speech, prompting Tagore to criticise those who walked out.
