DMK’s executive committee meeting, held on Friday at the party headquarters Anna Arivalayam in Chennai, adopted nine resolutions aimed at speeding up organisational work after the party’s Assembly election defeat.
A key decision was to increase the number of district secretary posts to 110 by reorganising existing party districts. The party currently has 77 district secretaries; the restructuring is expected to create more leadership slots, with expectations that youth and women could get greater opportunities.
The meeting also fixed age ceilings for several levels of office-bearers: 45 for branch secretaries, 50 for circle secretaries, 60 for union secretaries and 70 for district secretaries. Another resolution initially capped any post at two terms, but it was later amended to allow up to three terms specifically for district secretaries.
The report noted that the question of whether new district secretary posts should be filled through internal elections or direct appointments has triggered debate within the party, with concerns that elections could revive factionalism.
The age-cap move has also drawn criticism on social media, as the party has not set any age limit for the powerful post of state president, even while imposing limits for other organisational positions.
