DMK president M.K. Stalin on Friday said the party was not formed by people who entered politics out of boredom, but by those who came to fight and struggle. He made the remarks while addressing the DMK executive committee meeting held in Chennai.
Calling it a crucial meeting in the party’s history, Stalin said the leadership would, with the committee’s approval, introduce significant changes to the party’s organisational structure. He said the DMK’s strength even after 75 years lies in its system and internal structure.
Recalling former chief minister M. Karunanidhi’s words, Stalin said the party’s organisational framework would safeguard the DMK’s continuity beyond individuals. He said that strength is what has helped the party stand firm over the years.
Stalin also pointed to the role of functionaries’ performance as one of the factors behind electoral setbacks. Instead of replacing individuals constituency by constituency, he said a comprehensive self-assessment is needed, and that several changes in the administrative set-up would follow.
He acknowledged the reforms could be tough and bitter for some, but urged cooperation, saying the decisions taken would ensure the party remains vibrant for the next century. In a social media post later, he said the DMK—known for making comebacks—would return and “repay with interest and principal.”
