Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple in Thrissur witnessed an unprecedented rush on Saturday (Aug. 23), as a record 444 couples tied the knot in a single day.
The temple is known for hosting large numbers of weddings during auspicious muhurtham days in the Malayalam month of Avani, when the flow of devotees also rises sharply. Saturday’s muhurtham day, however, saw the highest number of marriages ever recorded at the shrine.
Gopinath, director of the Guruvayur Devaswom Board, said this was the first time in the temple’s history that so many weddings were conducted in one day. He also credited the cooperation of the public for helping the arrangements run smoothly.
To regulate the crowd, more than 100 police personnel were deployed, and medical support was kept ready with doctors on standby. The first wedding concluded at 4.10 am, and the temple’s six mandapams were used to conduct ceremonies, averaging about 60 weddings per hour through the day.
