Chennai: Outstanding borrowings of 24 Tamil Nadu government public sector undertakings (PSUs), boards, corporations and cooperative institutions, taken with state government guarantees, stood at Rs 1.81 lakh crore as of July, according to information that has emerged.
Tamil Nadu operates a range of state-run entities, including the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation, the state-run cable TV company and the State Express Transport Corporation. Utilities and civic bodies such as the power transmission and generation entities, the green energy agency, the power distribution utility, and the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board are also among the state’s institutions.
These organisations raise funds for various projects by borrowing from banks and central financial institutions. Loans are taken both directly by the entities and under government guarantee.
The report said the total borrowings under both routes amount to Rs 3.25 lakh crore. Within the guaranteed portion, 10 PSUs including the Civil Supplies Corporation account for Rs 36,256 crore, 11 boards and corporations for Rs 1.44 lakh crore, and three cooperative institutions for Rs 152 crore.
