Chennai: In the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Monday (August 24), Minister Rajmohan urged the Speaker to consider replacing the term commonly used for a first-time MLA address with “introductory speech”.
The issue came up amid interruptions during a speech by Usilampatti TVK MLA Vijay Mahalingam. Rajmohan said the member was delivering his first address and conveying the thoughts of his constituency, which could include both pleasant and harsh points.
He added that it would be better for members seated opposite to respond after the speech concludes, and said frequent interruptions were not appropriate.
PMK MLA Sowmiya Anbumani then formally suggested that the Assembly avoid the term “virgin speech” and instead use “introductory speech”.
Responding, Rajmohan called it a good suggestion and said steps should be taken, after discussion, to adopt “introductory speech” in place of the earlier term.
