The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government led by Chief Minister Vijay, which recently completed 100 days in office, has announced a new benefit for legislators. Speaking in the Assembly on August 19, the Chief Minister said government cars would be provided to all MLAs, along with a monthly allowance of Rs 1 lakh for vehicle maintenance and an assistant.

The announcement, made without party-wise distinction, was linked to requests from some MLAs said to come from modest backgrounds. However, the move has triggered criticism that MLAs already receive salaries, allowances and other official facilities, making an additional car benefit unnecessary.

Opponents and sections of the public have also argued that many MLAs are wealthy and own multiple vehicles, and that purchasing cars with public funds could add a significant burden on the state exchequer. Some opposition voices went further, alleging the scheme could be used to discourage MLAs from speaking against the government.

At the same time, parties including the DMK, PMK and the Communists have said their MLAs do not need cars and have urged that the benefit be limited to economically weaker MLAs. The broader public view reflected in the debate is that cars may be justified for poor and first-time MLAs, but not for those who are well-off.

The article argues that a committee should be appointed to examine MLAs’ financial background using asset declarations and affidavits filed during nomination, including family assets, to identify who is genuinely eligible. It also notes the government’s assurance in the Assembly that only eligible TVK MLAs would apply, and links the discussion to the Chief Minister’s stated anti-corruption stance, including steps such as announcing a WhatsApp number for complaints about bribery.
