Tamil Nadu has collected Rs 17,855 crore in revenue over the last four months from excise duty and value-added tax (VAT) levied on liquor sold through TASMAC retail outlets.

TASMAC, the state-run corporation, sells alcoholic beverages through its network of retail shops. The state government imposes excise duty and VAT on these products, which form a major portion of the revenue.

For the April–July period of the current financial year, the government received Rs 4,066 crore through excise duty and Rs 13,789 crore through VAT, taking the total to Rs 17,855 crore.

Officials expect the revenue to touch Rs 60,000 crore this financial year, citing measures such as a special fee on each liquor carton purchased from distilleries and enabling customers to select products online and buy them at shops.
