A stabbing incident in New York City’s Times Square left one person dead and another critically injured, after a woman armed with two knives attacked pedestrians near 42nd Street and 7th Avenue.

Bystanders helped rescue the two victims and rushed them to hospital. One woman later died despite treatment, while a man remains in a dangerous condition, according to reports.

Police who arrived at the scene repeatedly ordered the suspect to drop the knives. Officials said she refused and moved toward officers in an apparent attempt to attack.

NYPD personnel opened fire, and the woman was injured and taken to hospital, where she later died. Police said preliminary checks found no link between the incident and terrorism.

Investigators have secured CCTV footage from the area and continue to probe the case. Authorities also urged the public to avoid the immediate vicinity of the scene.
