The Indian Administrative Service (IAS) is widely seen as one of the most sought-after careers, earned only after clearing the highly competitive civil services examination. Yet, Uttar Pradesh has witnessed an unusual trend: 13 IAS officers have exited service over the past seven years.
According to the report, nine officers opted for voluntary retirement (VRS), while four resigned after not receiving VRS approval. Uttar Pradesh has been governed by the BJP since 2017, with Yogi Adityanath as Chief Minister. The report notes that discussions within official circles often link exits, long leave and moves to central deputation to the pressure of matching the government’s fast-paced, strict administrative style.
Among the recent exits is Divya Mittal, who announced her decision to leave after 13 years in service. She last served as Special Secretary in the Revenue Department and did not publicly state a reason. However, the report says there is speculation she may contest the upcoming Assembly election.
Other names mentioned include Amod Kumar, who took VRS in November 2025, and Anamika Singh, who opted for VRS after permission for central government posting was denied. The report also points to growing interest among former officers in joining private companies or working as consultants, with higher pay and benefits cited as key attractions.
The list includes officers who cited reasons such as lack of interest in continuing service, personal and family circumstances, medical grounds, and not being assigned work. The report adds that, besides IAS officers, 10 IPS officers have also left service after the Yogi government came to power.
