Chennai Corporation sanitation workers’ ongoing protest became a point of debate in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, after Opposition Leader Udhayanidhi questioned the government over the agitation entering its 15th day.
Udhayanidhi said the workers have been protesting continuously and noted that Minister Rajmohan had earlier indicated that a solution would be reached quickly. He alleged that no amicable outcome has been achieved so far and asked when Chief Minister Vijay would fulfil the workers’ demands and whether he would meet and speak to them.
Responding in the House, Minister Rajmohan said the difficulties faced by the protesting workers had been explained in detail. He pointed out that during the previous regime, sanitation workers had staged protests for 100 to 150 days, and said the current situation was being handled with an inclusive approach.
Rajmohan added that files to address several demands are ready, while some issues involve financial implications. He said multiple unions are involved and that the government would bring them together to hold talks and work towards solutions at the earliest.
