Mumbai: The head of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Rajit Punhani, has praised Maharashtra Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe for bringing renewed attention to the importance of food safety and the role of state-level food safety commissioners.
Mundhe, who recently took charge in Maharashtra, has begun taking firm action against violations. Officials said enforcement has been carried out without discrimination, targeting erring restaurants and food manufacturing units, and sealing outlets operating without licences.
In an interview, Punhani said Mundhe’s work demonstrates that determined leadership can deliver results. He noted that food safety has historically not received due importance, and many officers were reluctant to take up the responsibility, with some even viewing the posting as a form of punishment.
Punhani argued that every state should treat the appointment of a dedicated food safety commissioner as essential. He added that he was pleased with Mundhe’s performance in Maharashtra, pointing out that the commissioner completed the work without increasing staff strength.
According to Punhani, the recent enforcement drive has helped create wider public awareness about food safety and the significance of the commissioner’s role in states.
