The Madras High Court has deferred its verdict, without fixing a date, in petitions challenging the Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker’s decision to accept the resignations of six MLAs elected on the AIADMK ticket.
According to the case details, the six legislators later joined the ruling TVK. The Speaker accepted their resignations, while the AIADMK has maintained that action should instead be initiated under the anti-defection law and said it had submitted complaints to the Speaker.
The petitions were filed by AIADMK whip Agri Krishnamoorthy and National People Power Party leader M.L. Ravi, contending that the resignations were accepted even as disqualification proceedings were pending. After hearing arguments from all sides, the High Court reserved its order.
Separately, Isakki Subbiah—who resigned after being elected as an AIADMK MLA and later joined TVK—filed an additional plea seeking permission to function again as an MLA until an election petition is decided. The High Court said it could not entertain his plea.
