Food safety authorities in Maharashtra have uncovered an alleged racket involving the alteration of manufacturing and expiry dates on packaged food products, officials said. The action was carried out by teams led by Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Munde.
Since taking charge two months ago, Munde has overseen raids at more than 1,500 restaurants and food manufacturing units, according to officials. Establishments found violating norms have been sealed, while spoiled, expired and adulterated food items have been seized and destroyed.
In a recent inspection in Navi Mumbai, officials from the state Food and Drug Administration said they found packaged foods of well-known brands with dates allegedly tampered with. The seized stock was valued at over ₹76 lakh.
The items included chips, noodles and soup packets from leading brands. In connection with the case, the licence of “Sadhana Enterprises” in the Turbhe area was cancelled with immediate effect, and a case has been registered, officials added.
