India’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert warning of potential flood surges linked to glacial lakes in Sikkim. The advisory comes amid heightened regional concern following severe flooding in neighbouring Nepal.
According to the NDMA, more than 40 glacial lakes in Sikkim have been identified as being in a dangerous condition. Of these, seven lakes have been classified as capable of causing very high impact.
The authority said 16 of the lakes—many located at around 17,000 feet—are under monitoring based on detailed scientific assessment. Factors such as lake depth and length, water volume, glacier characteristics and risks from landslides have been evaluated.
Following the warning, the NDMA said measures are being taken to reduce risk by lowering lake water levels. As part of this, work has begun to reduce the water level of Shakoshu Lake by up to 40 metres, aimed at limiting downstream flow in the event of a glacial breach.
